Finding Connection and Joy: How Outstanding Life Brings LGBTQ+ Older Adults Together

For many older adults, especially those in the LGBTQ+ community, isolation can be a dailyreality. Outstanding Life, a virtual senior center, is changing that, creating a place where people can connect, laugh, and simply feel like they belong.

Carla, a transgender woman in Worcester, Massachusetts, remembers discovering Outstanding Life at a conference. “Being an older trans person, just transitioning, there was nothing out there,” she says. “So, to talk with Amy [the program director] and others, to know there might be a place for older trans folks to gather, it was huge. It made me feel less alone.”

Nina, from Augusta, Maine, found OutstandingLife through Facebook. “But the reason I really like being involved is because I moved to a new community and hadn’t met a lot of LGBTQ folks.” she says.” It's a heterosexual world. That's the world I live in. That's the world we all live in. And I just feel like I don't belong much of the time. And OutstandingLife gives me a place where I feel like I fit.”

Carla especially appreciates the new trans support group. “It’s just getting started, but it’s a place to bounce questions off others, share experiences, and know you’re not alone,” she says. “Even in a small group, it makes a huge difference.”

The programs are varied—Banned Book Clubs, writing and craft workshops, legal and financial tutorials, coffee chats, health and wellness activities, even weather discussions. Carla, who is a writer, especially enjoys poetry and book groups. “Reading is a solitary kind of activity,” she notes. “You’re forming ideas on your own, and then we start talking about them. People have different takes on characters or the message within the story. It really brings more meaning to the reading.”

Nina highlights the social aspect, talking about pets, doing crafts, and playing games. “Isolation kills people,” she says. “Research shows that it contributes to suicide, dementia, heart disease. It’s so important to give people ways to connect.”

Even the technology hasn’t held OutstandingLife members back. “Zoom works surprisingly well,” Carla says. “I get lost sometimes, but everyone is so helpful.”
